Spring 1

English

This half term in English, we will started by looking at the fictional story, The Journey Home. We worked on using adjectives and the four different sentence types. We continued to focus on spelling rules and ensuring we have capital letters and full stops placed correctly throughout our writing. We began teaching joining in handwriting for children that have secured letter formation.

Maths

In maths lessons, we focused on number, particularly multiplication and division strategies. This involved recalling facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times table. We consolidated the children’s understanding of place value, the value of numbers and how to partition numbers into hundreds, tens and ones.

Wider curriculum

Computing

Our computing unit was Robot Algorithms. We programmed Beebots to move around mats whilst avoiding obstacles. We worked on making predictions about what might happen given certain instructions and debugged when the robot didn't behave as we expected.

Art

We were inspired by Kenyan artists to create prints. We used both relief printing and block printing in bold colours.

Geography

We learnt about Kenya including its location and proximity to the equator and how this effects the weather. We found that Kenya has lots of different habitats. We compared parts of Kenya to London.

Science

For the entirety of spring term, we are looking at living things and their habitats. We learnt about habitats and micro habitats and how they sustain the organisms that live in them. We also looked at the adaptations animals have to make them suited to their habitats.

RE

We learnt about the Easter story.

Autumn 2

We had a wonderful time learning about the Great Fire of London in autumn 2. We especially enjoyed our talks from the museum of London and National Archives. We had loved making bread for DT and taking photos for our computing unit - photography and in PE we made up routines in dance. Finally, our end of term party was the perfect end to the term with lots of yummy food, some music and party games!

English

We began autumn 2 by learning about London in 1666. We used the book, The Great Fire of London by Emma Adams and James Weston Lewis to learn about the fire and inspire our writing. We acted out how the fire began in Thomas Farynor's bakery. At the end of the unit, we used all our knowledge about the fire to create non-fiction leaflets.

After writing about the Great Fire of London, we began to read the book The Bear and Piano by David Litchfield. The book focuses on themes of resilience, music and home. After our writing unit, we wrote our own versions of the story - replacing the animal and the instrument.

Maths

In autumn 2, we spent most of our maths lessons looking at addition and subtraction. We used concrete resources and drawing to build up to adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers. We also looked at word problems involving addition and subtraction. After our addition and subtraction unit, we learnt about 2D and 3D shapes. We focused on the vocabulary associated with shapes and how to identify them using this vocabulary.

Wider curriculum

Computing

Our computing unit was photography. We practised taking photos with digital cameras considering whether we needed to use landscape or portrait and utilising the flash when needed. We uploaded our photos to the computer and used editing software. In the process, we learnt about how photos can be edited and that we should always ask ourselves if what we see is real or has been edited.

DT

We baked bread liked Thomas Farynor for our DT project this half term. We tasted and evaluated existed bread products and planned out our final design. Then, we measured the ingredients to mix up the dough and knead it to the shapes we had desgined. Finally, we cooked and tasted our bread.

History

We began our topic of the Great Fire of London with an immersion day. We sang songs about the fire and had a workshop from the National Archives. Later in the topic, we compared London in 1666 with London now. We also took part in a Now Press Play experience about the fire. In this topic, we learnt about the different types of evidence we have to study as historians and how each can be used.

Science

In this half term, we learnt about materials and their properties. We added lots of words to our scientific vocabulary like opaque and translucent. We experimented with different materials and how well they served their purposes this helped us to understand why certain materials are used for certain reasons. To answer the big question for this unit, we drew our bedrooms, labeling the materials used and their properties.

RE

In RE we learned about the holy books for different religions. We considered the stories within and what followers think these teach them. We also learned the rules religions hold for the treatment of their special books.

Autumn 1

English

We have started our writing based around the text, After the Fall by Dan Santat. To start the unit, we found some cracked eggs in our classrooms and thought about where they might have come from. We then wrote sentences about oviparous animals and created a class fact file. We also made paper airplanes just liked Humpty Dumpty in the story then wrote a recount of how we made them.

Maths

We started the term looking at place value and will move on to addition and subtraction. We use lots of concrete resources and our courtyards.

Reading

We have started guided reading each morning from 9-9.20. Each class has different reading tasks and we use it as a great opportunity to encourage children to read for pleasure. Remember to read at home each day.

Science

Our science topic is animals including humans and we focus on keeping ourselves healthy.

Geography

Our geography topic is pirates, we use this topic to look at the continents and oceans as well as locational and directional language.

computing

Our computing topic is computing systems and networks.

art

We started off the year with our whole school art project- flower power. Year 2 focused on the artist Kandinsky and his bold colourful circles.

pshe

In these lessons, we look at what keeps humans healthy and growing and changing.

pe

Our indoor PE topic is gymnastics. We will look at balances, jumps, rolls and travelling then create simple routines using our movements. Our outdoor topic is multiskills we focus on running, jumping and agility during these lessons.
