Japan

Our topic for this entire term is Japan. It is an amazing country with a unique blend of traditional and modern. We have many creative pieces of art work, DT, experiments, computing and topic projects all related to Japan so please keep an eye on the amazing work.

 Japan Day

We had an amazing Japan Day where we practised calligraphy, the visual Japanese art form of writing. In addition, we made sushi and created a range of origamis.

Music

Since September, 6YH have been learning to play the clarinet. They have made tremendous progress and have learnt all the notes for 7 songs. They performed all the songs at our in school concert and they did a fantastic job!

In Science, we have been investigating static electricity and different types of electrical circuits. We have also explored different forms of energy and the impact they have on the environment.

Using card, tissue paper, lolly sticks, glue and paint, we created our own Japanese fans using the technique of silk painting and printing. The outcomes were amazing!

SPRING 2

ART

The Great Wave by Hokusai is one of the most famous pieces of artwork in Japan. We experimented and created our own interpretation using different styles and resources. Can you spot Mount Fuji?

PE/PSHE/WELLBEING

As part of our PSHE/wellbeing unit, we have been exploring the different ways which we can relax our minds and engage in an activity, which helps our mental wellbeing. We were lucky to have a specialist lead a yoga session.

WORLD BOOK DAY

World Book Day 2022 was amazing; the children put so much effort into their costumes. How many book characters can you identify?

ART/DT

After comparing the maps of Japan and the UK, it was clear that the terrain of both lands were considerably different. We reached a conclusion that Japan is far more mountainous, as a result we made a map out of salt dough to show the different elevations.

VOLCANOES PROJECT

We studied Japanese volcanoes and the reasons why Japan experiences a large number of volcanoes. After studying the different parts of a volcano, the class began to design a volcano. We considered a wide range of resources that we needed to create the volcanoes. The bottle served as the magma chamber and primary vent and we used newspaper to create the layers and shape. Afterwards, we painted them to create a realistic effect. Finally, we mixed diet Cola and mentos (originals) to cause a volcanic eruption.

SUMMER 1

HOUSE WINNERS: RUBIES

Congratulations to the rubies who earned the most gems in the last term. They were rewarded with a lovely Bowling trip and showed off their great bowling skills.

CONGRATULATIONS AND WELL DONE TO YEAR 6 FOR COMPLETING THEIR SATS!

As a reward for all the hardwork, dedication and resilience of our year 6 children, we all went for a fun trip to Air Thrill.

The Queen's Platinum Jubilee Tea Party

As part of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, 6YH closed the term in style with a Tea Party.

RIVERS PROJECT

As part of our Rivers topic, 6YH learnt about all the parts of a river and some key facts about the world famous River Thames. Using all this information, the class worked in small groups to create a 3D River Thames.
